Where the Light Waits

Where the Light Waits

There are places where light does not shine to be seen.

It shines so there is somewhere to return to.

This series of Christmas cards was born from a simple thought:

even in winter —

when the world grows quiet

and the days become shorter —

a small light is enough to remind us

that we are not lost.

In these paintings, the lantern is not a festive decoration.

It is a quiet presence.

A keeper of calm.

It waits.

It does not ask who will come.

A light that remains

Somewhere, a lantern hangs in a winter forest

with only one purpose —

to keep peace alive.

Elsewhere, someone left a light behind,

not knowing who might pass by,

but trusting that kindness does not need to ask first.

In another place, the lantern stands by the water,

where light bends and softens,

finding its way not only through the landscape,

but through the heart.

And sometimes, it is there for a wanderer —

small, tired, perhaps lost —

because even a wanderer deserves warmth.

And hope, hanging in the air

as gently as winter’s breath.

Five lanterns, five quiet messages

Each painting carries a different shade of the same truth:

– light can wait without demanding

– silence can protect without speaking

– every return begins with a tiny spark of courage

– kindness often arrives before we fully understand it

– and even in the deepest winter,

light always finds its way

These are not illustrations of one story.

They are moments we all recognize —

even if we don’t always have words for them.

Why a lantern

A lantern is not about direction.

It is about presence.

It does not say, “This is the way you must go.”

It says, “You can pause here for a moment.”

And that is why it belongs to Christmas.

Not the loud kind —

but the quiet one.

Not the one filled with noise,

but with a single, steady light.

A small light is enough

Maybe someone will hang one of these lanterns on their wall.

Maybe they will send it to someone they love.

Or maybe they will carry away just one thought:

Warmth, safety, and hope

are often waiting right there

where you pause for a moment.

And sometimes, that is all Christmas needs to be.
